Sitting for prolonged periods is a major health hazard for truck drivers. Known as a “silent killer,” being sedentary for long stretches raises risks of chronic illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified obesity as one of the most pressing health concerns facing semi-truck drivers today. Coupled with high rates of cigarette smoking, these factors put over-the-road truckers at increased likelihood of developing high cholesterol, strained backs, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and other serious conditions. To help mitigate these risks, taking regular breaks and doing even brief bouts of exercise is encouraged. Simple stretches, walking laps around the truck, and utilizing rest-stop fitness stations can all make a difference. Try incorporating lunges, squats, and push-ups into your Pre/Post trip inspections. During your 30-minute break, take the time to do another inspection of your equipment while incorporating activities to raise your heart rate, and stretch your muscles. Use these times to make sure you have solid equipment on the road, and take care of your own health.
Building small movements into the daily routine improves circulation, flexibility, and mental alertness. Maintaining better health not only improves quality of life but enhances safety behind the wheel.
